Printin’ and Playin’ Episode 22 – Hanafuda / Koi Koi / Go Stop

pic1172215_lg

In this episode I talk about hanafuda cards, including a brief history of the origins of this quite cool deck of cards from Japan, as well as a couple of the more popular games played with them – Koi Koi, and Go Stop!

After you’ve listened, you can get more info on the cards here:

So, anyone wanna play a game?

Using VASSAL, I mean.

This is an idea that popped into my head a couple of times – there are several print-n-play games that are available for play using the VASSAL game engine (basically a “virtual board” where you sort of click-n-drag your game pieces to move stuff) and it could be kind of cool to give them a play with listeners of the podcast.

The best way to do it would probably be “live” using Skype, but play-by-email is also a possibility.

It could also be cool to chat about the game after giving it a try, and if that’s done using Skype you might get to be a guest on the podcast 😉

[Please note I am probably not interested in playing a game with the person who actually designed it – I think it would skew my review of the game.]

Admittedly, we would sort of be skipping the “print” part of print-and-play, but for a few games we can sort of get a feel for it to see if it’s sort printing or not, I guess you could say.

There are several games I’d be interested in trying out in this fashion:

Cheese Chasers
City of Guilds
Demonlord
Galaxy of D
Grav Armor
Outpost Gamma
Postcard from the Revolution
Star Viking
Sword and Sail
Zombie Plague
Get to the Chopper!!!
Pay Dirt
PitLane
Yardmaster Express

Also, if you need more info on VASSAL you can go here.

If you think you might be interested in helping me check one of these out, let me know!

Printin’ and Playin’ Episode 21 – Dune Express

pic497582_mdAnother episode already? Crazy, I know!

I was recently able to get Dune Express to the table, and I wanted to get my thoughts down while they were still fresh!

Those who have already had a chance to play this one may notice that I totally goof up one of the movement rules in the description – don’t worry, I correct later on.

After you’ve listened, you can get more info on the game here:

Printin’ and Playin’ Episode 20 – Shadows Upon Lassadar

I was able to pull myself away from working on the nursery (we found out it’s going to be boy, by the way!) long enough to get out another episode – this time about the solitaire fantasy adventure game
Shadows Upon Lassadar!

Gaming Hoopla

Just a quick mention that on September 27-28 I’ll be attending the Fall Gaming Hoopla in southern Wisconsin – an amazing weekend of gaming with all proceeds being donated to The American Cancer Society (gaming events that donate to charity are frikkin’ awesome in my book – and is why I’ll also be participating in Extra Life in October, something I’ll post more details about later).

If by some odd chance you’re also planning to be at the Hoopla, let me know! Maybe we can sneak in a couple of PnP games with all of the other activities 😉

New Digs!

Welcome to the new home of the podcast!

Previously located at http://printin-and-playin.podomatic.com – but not only was Pod-O-Matic lacking in some areas I felt were important, I was also quickly running out of room under my “intro” account and the prices they want to continue with a “Pro” account are nuts – so I went and found myself a web host, installed WordPress with a podcasting plug-in – and here we are!

I’m still working on getting it over to iTunes, but hopefully soon.
